Visual Literacy in Teaching and Learning: A Literature Perspective

The article focuses on the concept of visual literacy and its impact on learning. It reviews educational research showing that incorporating visuals into teaching can enhance learning outcomes. Visual literacy is defined as the ability to both interpret and create images to communicate ideas and concepts. The paper introduces visual literacy and examines studies on different types of visual supports used in instruction, including: no visual support, still visual aids, and animated visual sequences. The review aims to encourage educators to integrate visual enhancements into their teaching practices and to develop students’ visual skills alongside their verbal, reading, and mathematical abilities (Stokes, 2008).
